Department: Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship (OCBF)
The Bookstore Associate (PT) provides welcoming, knowledgeable, and efficient service to members, guests, and customers while supporting the daily operations of the OCBF Bookstore. This position helps customers select products and complete purchases, processes sales transactions, receives and replenishes merchandise, maintains attractive product displays, and helps ensure accurate inventory and an organized retail environment.
Core Responsibilities
Ministerial Responsibilities & Spiritual Care
All employees of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship serve in a ministerial role that contributes to the spiritual mission and ministry of the church. As such, employees are expected to model Christian values, support the spiritual development of others, and actively contribute to a Christ-centered work environment. This includes engaging in prayer and spiritual encouragement with co-workers and church members, participating in staff meetings and Bible studies, and demonstrating a personal commitment to ongoing spiritual growth.
Customer Service & Sales
- Welcome and assist customers in a warm, attentive, and service-focused manner.
- Help customers find books, Bibles, study resources, gifts, apparel, and other merchandise based on their interests or needs.
- Maintain current knowledge of bookstore products, promotions, pricing, and available resources to effectively respond to customer questions.
- Accurately process purchases, payments, discounts, returns, exchanges, and other transactions using the Point of Sale (POS) system in accordance with established procedures.
- Respond to customer questions and concerns professionally and seek assistance when additional support is needed.
- Support a positive bookstore experience that reflects OCBF’s standards of excellence, hospitality, and service.
Merchandise & Inventory Support
- Receive, unpack, verify, price, and prepare incoming merchandise for sale.
- Replenish merchandise and maintain appropriate stock levels throughout the sales floor.
- Assist with inventory counts, product reconciliation, and identification of inventory discrepancies.
- Maintain accurate product pricing, labeling, and placement.
- Communicate low-stock items, inventory discrepancies, damaged merchandise, or other concerns to bookstore leadership.
- Assist with special orders, product holds, and order fulfillment as assigned.
Merchandising & Store Operations
- Maintain clean, organized, attractive, and customer-ready shelves, displays, counters, and sales areas.
- Arrange merchandise and promotional displays to support product visibility, seasonal initiatives, ministry events, and bookstore promotions.
- Assist with changing displays and merchandising materials as new products, ministry resources, or promotional campaigns are introduced.
- Follow established procedures for protecting merchandise and minimizing loss or damage.
- Assist with opening, closing, and general bookstore operating procedures as assigned.
- Support bookstore events, special sales, ministry initiatives, and other activities requiring retail support.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support bookstore operations.
Cash Handling & Point of Sale
- Maintain accuracy and accountability when processing cash, credit/debit, electronic, and other approved forms of payment.
- Follow established cash-handling and financial control procedures.
- Assist with register opening, closing, balancing, and reconciliation procedures as assigned.
- Promptly communicate transaction discrepancies or POS issues to bookstore leadership.
Qualifications & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous retail, bookstore, customer service, or related experience preferred.
- Experience using a Point of Sale (POS) system or computerized inventory system preferred.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and data entry.
- Experience handling cash and completing retail transactions preferred.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate warmly and professionally with members, guests, customers, and coworkers.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to transaction and inventory accuracy.
- Ability to learn and maintain knowledge of bookstore products and resources.
- Basic mathematical and cash-handling skills.
- Ability to operate a POS system and other standard retail technology.
